May 1st, often called International Workers’ Day or Labour Day, is a day dedicated to celebrating workers and the labour movement. In some countries, May 1st is a public holiday, while in others it is more of a symbolic day of activism and celebration. It varies depeing on a given work places' collective agreement if it is a day off or not.
May 5th in Denmark is known as Liberation Day (Befrielsesdagen). It marks the end of the occupation of Denmark during World War II.
Today, the day is remembered as a symbol of freedom and peace. Many Danes honor it by:
- Placing candles in their windows on the evening of May 4
- Attending memorial events
- Reflecting on the importance of democracy and independence
It is not an official public holiday, but it remains an important historical day in Denmark.
May 14th is Ascension Day and May 24th + 25th is Pentecost - all three are national holidays and many supermarkets will be closed. Many Danes will also take the Friday after Ascension day off.
May 26th is King Frederik's birthday. It is not a day off but it is an official flag day and you will see flags many official places.
